Gout Treatment

Gout Treatment

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes sudden pain and swelling in the joints, most often in the big toe. It happens when there is too much uric acid in the blood, which forms sharp crystals that build up in the joints. These crystals can cause intense pain, redness, and inflammation. At PharmXtra, we offer a range of trusted treatments to help manage gout symptoms and prevent future flare-ups, all backed by an online consultation with a registered independent prescriber.

More Information

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to sudden and severe pain, swelling, redness, and warmth in affected joints. It most commonly affects the joint at the base of the big toe but can also occur in other joints such as the ankles, knees, wrists, or elbows. Gout flares can be triggered by factors such as diet, alcohol consumption, obesity, certain medications, or underlying health conditions.

While there is no cure for gout, it can be effectively managed with treatment and lifestyle modifications to control symptoms, reduce the frequency of flare-ups, and prevent long-term complications such as joint damage or kidney stones. Treatment aims to lower uric acid levels in the blood, alleviate pain and inflammation during acute attacks, and prevent the formation of uric acid crystals.

Yes, there are several natural approaches that can help manage gout symptoms and reduce the risk of flare-ups. These include making dietary changes such as reducing intake of purine-rich foods like red meat, organ meats, shellfish, and alcohol, while increasing consumption of low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding crash diets or fasting can also help prevent gout attacks. Some individuals may find relief from gout symptoms by using natural remedies such as tart cherry juice, bromelain supplements, or applying ice packs to affected joints. It is important to note that you should always consult with your doctor to ensure that natural treatments are safe and suitable for your condition.

Gout treatment typically involves a combination of medications, lifestyle modifications, and dietary changes aimed at managing symptoms and reducing the risk of recurrent attacks. Medications may include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), colchicine, corticosteroids, or medications that lower uric acid levels such as allopurinol or febuxostat. Lifestyle modifications may include maintaining a healthy diet, limiting alcohol consumption, staying hydrated, losing weight if overweight, and avoiding triggers that can precipitate gout flares.

Gout treatments come in various forms, including oral medications (tablets or capsules), injectable medications, topical creams or gels, and dietary supplements. Oral medications are commonly used to manage gout symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Injectable medications such as corticosteroids may be used for more severe or refractory cases. Topical treatments such as ice packs or anti-inflammatory creams may provide temporary relief of pain and inflammation.

Many gout medications require a prescription from a healthcare provider, especially oral medications or injectable therapies. However, some over-the-counter medications such as NSAIDs or topical treatments may be available without a prescription. You should always consult with your doctor or healthcare provider for advice on whether a medication is suitable for you. Please note that at EU Meds, all requests for the supply of prescription medications are subject to an online clinical consultation, and the decision to prescribe will be made by a doctor.

I have to give Customer Service a shoutout. Unusually my parcel didn’t arrive in the 1 or 2 days. This was an issue with Yodel and unfortunately it landed during the Easter holiday. However, as soon as Customer Services were back in the office they got in touch with Yodel and my parcel was delivered the next day. I have to say that I normally get a great service from Yodel as well.
