Genital Herpes Treatments
Herpes is a viral infection that affects many people in the UK, though it’s not quite as widespread as some may think. There are two main types of the virus: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), which usually causes cold sores around the mouth, and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), which typically causes genital herpes. Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that affects the skin in and around the genital area.
While there is currently no cure for genital herpes, it can be effectively managed with the right treatment. At PharmXtra, we offer prescription medications to help reduce symptoms, shorten outbreaks, and lower the risk of passing the virus to others.
More Information
What is Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). Unlike bacterial infections such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea, genital herpes can’t be treated with antibiotics because it’s viral. There are two types of HSV: HSV-1, which often causes cold sores around the mouth, and HSV-2, which typically causes genital herpes. HSV-1 can also cause genital infections through oral sex.
Many people with genital herpes don’t experience any noticeable symptoms, but those who do may develop painful blisters or sores around the genitals, which usually heal within a few weeks. Because it can be passed on through unprotected sexual contact (including oral sex), using condoms and having open conversations about sexual health is important for reducing the risk of infection.
What causes Genital Herpes?
Genital herpes is caused by the herpes simplex virus, most commonly HSV-2, and spreads through skin-to-skin contact during sex. The virus stays in your body even after symptoms clear, meaning it can come back in future outbreaks. Even if you don’t have visible sores, you can still pass the virus on to others. You can also catch genital herpes through oral sex if your partner has a cold sore caused by HSV-1.
Herpes tends to follow a cycle – after the initial infection, it can remain inactive (dormant) in the body and reactivate during times of stress, illness, or if your immune system is low. The first outbreak is often the most intense, while future flare-ups are usually milder and easier to manage.
How can I treat Genital Herpes?
Although there’s no permanent cure for genital herpes, it can be effectively managed with treatment. At PharmXtra, we offer prescription antiviral medications to help shorten outbreaks, ease discomfort, and reduce the risk of spreading the virus to others.
Managing genital herpes also means being aware of your sexual health. You should avoid sexual activity during an active outbreak, and always use protection during sex. Let your partner know you have herpes, even if you’re not showing symptoms, and speak to your GP or midwife if you’re pregnant, as the virus can be harmful to babies during birth.
Standard STI tests don't check for herpes, so you’ll need a specific test to confirm the infection. Once diagnosed, you can start treatment, learn your personal triggers, and manage symptoms more confidently. The good news is that while herpes can cause discomfort, it doesn’t affect fertility or increase your risk of cervical cancer.

Rated
out of 5 on An exceptional transaction enabled by the newly enhanced website. The medications from the EU continue to be reliable, and I wholeheartedly endorse them. However, I do have a slight concern regarding the 'discounts' of up to 20% on my next purchase, which I regularly receive right after completing my order. By the time I am ready for my next purchase, these discounts have already lapsed. I would appreciate it if you could consider this minor yet significant opportunity for my upcoming purchase. Overall, I am very satisfied. Thank you all. Best regards.
